How to Check Domain History Data?

Table of Contents

In the article “Domain Naming and Selection Tips for Independent Websites: The First Step to Building a Professional Website“, we mentioned the necessity of checking domain history data for SEO purposes. To avoid purchasing a domain with a bad history (such as being penalized by search engines or being used for black or gray market content), after narrowing down your list of potential domains, you can perform a simple initial check on the domain’s history data. In the previous article, we briefly introduced some tools for checking domain history data. This article will further elaborate on how to use these tools.

Domain History Lookup Tools

To check the history data of a domain, you can use the following three tools:
DomainTools(whois.domaintools.com): By checking the number of times a domain has changed hosts or IP addresses in recent years, you can get an indication of the domain’s ownership changes to some extent.
Wayback Machine (archive.org):It is an internet historical information database that allows you to check the historical page data of domains that are no longer directly accessible. This is very useful for checking the historical content of a domain.
SEMRUSH(semrush.com):It is a well-known comprehensive SEO tool that allows you to check domain traffic, backlinks, keyword data, trends, and more. Of course, it is a paid tool,  but it can be used if conditions allow.

The following will demonstrate using a domain whose content is no longer accessible (geocities.com) as an example:

As shown in the image above, after entering the domain you want to query, you can see the domain’s registration date, expiration date, as well as changes in IP and hosting over the past several years. It’s recommended to mainly focus on hosting changes. If there have been frequent hosting changes, it indicates that the domain has likely changed ownership multiple times, which may require further investigation into whether it was used for illicit content during those periods.

WAYBACK Machine

Access Address: archive.org

It is also known as the Wayback Machine, and in my opinion, it is one of the top 10 free internet tools. It stores snapshots of web pages from over the past 20 years (you can even see what Google’s homepage looked like in 2000). Due to the massive storage space required, and the fact that the tool’s revenue model is quite limited, it faces the risk of shutting down at any time. Therefore, if you find this tool useful, I encourage you to support it as much as possible, so this free internet tool can continue to exist for a longer time.

As shown in the image above, this is a snapshot of the homepage of the domain (geocities.com) from 2020. The different colors represent the following information:
Red: Server error (50x) on the page, inaccessible.
Orange:  Page not found (404 status).
Green: The page has been redirected (30X status)
Blue: The page content is accessible normally

By clicking on the blue snapshot link from October 2, 2007, you can view what the homepage of the domain looked like on that date:

SEMRUSH

Access Address: semrush.com

SEMRUSH, as a comprehensive SEO analysis tool, offers a wide range of features. When checking if a domain has been penalized, the main focus should be on analyzing the domain’s traffic trend and keyword ranking trend data.
The following image shows the organic traffic and keyword ranking data for geocities.com:
流量与关键词排名趋势
As we can see, the domain’s traffic and keyword rankings nearly dropped to zero in February 2014. By comparing this with data from the Wayback Machine tool, it’s verified that around February 2014, the domain was completely redirected to a Yahoo subdomain. As a result, it no longer had any traffic or keyword data statistics.
Similarly, by combining SEMRUSH and the Wayback Machine tool, if you find that during the period when the domain was accessible via the Wayback Machine, the traffic and keyword rankings experienced a sharp decline or dropped to zero, it is highly likely that the domain was penalized by search engines. This should raise a red flag. For example:

流量与关键词排名趋势

By combining the three tools mentioned above, you can make an informed judgment and avoid purchasing domains that have been used for illicit industry content or have been penalized by search engines, thus saving you from the potential complications caused by domain risks.

That concludes the share on “How to Check Domain History Data.” I hope it will be helpful to readers who are in need of this information.
